Scenario planning and community development in healthcare

For Zelfstandige Klinieken Nederland (ZKN), Jester developed four thought-provoking scenarios for the future of the healthcare landscape in which their members operate. Through our online tool "Mijn Toekomst" and a series of masterclasses, members were given over 150 concrete actions to respond to the future, as well as the knowledge to keep the strategic dialogue alive inside their own organisations.

The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly. The cost of an ageing population will keep rising in the coming years, medical technology is advancing at speed and a range of government measures is reaching the sector. The future of the 170 independent clinics (with 380 locations) that are members of the trade association Zelfstandige Klinieken Nederland (ZKN) is therefore hard to predict.

Together with ZKN, its members and stakeholders (from banks to insurers, from hospitals to government), Jester developed future scenarios to explore the developments coming towards the sector. The online environment "Mijn Toekomst" unlocks not only the scenarios and the trends they were built on for individual clinics, but also nearly 150 concrete actions clinics can use to their advantage going forward. With the tool, users can build their own strategic action list, slot the actions into an annual plan and check whether they are prepared for multiple scenarios.

To get even more value out of the tool and the study, Jester also delivered strategy masterclasses for ZKN members. Here participants got practical guidance on how to build robust strategy for their own clinic and strengthen the strategic dialogue inside the business.

The trajectory ended in four thought-provoking scenarios for what the healthcare landscape for independent clinics could look like. Through the "Mijn Toekomst" tool and the masterclasses, ZKN members were given practical handles to take concrete steps to prepare for whatever this future might bring.
