Continuously adjusting course in a dynamic environment

DeRegt Marine Cables is a manufacturer specialised in dynamic subsea cables. Think of cables running to subsea robots or cables inside a system for generating wave energy. With many clients in the offshore industry, DeRegt has been affected regularly in recent years by the volatility of the oil price. Together with Jester Strategy, DeRegt developed its current strategy, in which it chose to enter a new market and thus reduce its dependence on the oil and gas market. To keep a grip on execution of the strategy, DeRegt uses the OGSM method. To make the strategy concrete for the various departments, but above all to learn from execution and adjust course where needed.

DeRegt asked Jester Strategy to support the management team on strategic control. With a cycle of quarterly meetings and once a year an extensive review, strategy becomes more of a film than a photo. Each department has its annual plan in an OGSM, in which the status and progress of the various actions are monitored. This produces relevant information to discuss each quarter with the management team about where the bottlenecks in execution lie and how to solve them. Once a year the management team meets for an extensive evaluation of the strategy and its progress, and to set the priorities for the coming year. That is when the management team looks in detail at trends and developments in the external environment and changes in strengths and vulnerabilities in the business model. Jester Strategy facilitates DeRegt in giving substance to these meetings. This is how the organisation keeps a grip on execution and can adjust course in good time.

"We are pleased with our strategy, but the key lies in keeping consistent attention on execution. A lot happens in our environment, and holding course is a challenge. By deliberately reflecting on our strategy at set moments, we can make considered choices about what to do or not do."

Daniel Ruiter, DeRegt
