At the forefront of global education, RMIT University stands proudly among the top 250 universities worldwide. Their Research & Innovation Portfolio has consistently met ambitious targets, driving impactful research and innovation. Despite their success, the leadership team recognized that in a rapidly evolving world, relying on traditional approaches would not suffice for continued success.

In 2019, the challenge was clear: how could the R&I Portfolio anticipate and prepare for an uncertain future while maintaining its commitment to shaping global research and innovation? The key to addressing this challenge was not just in recognizing the shifts in the external environment but in aligning the entire team around a shared understanding of these changes.

To tackle this complex issue, we introduced our innovative approach to scenario planning. Often seen as a preliminary step in strategy development, scenario planning enables organizations to explore multiple plausible futures and make informed decisions without the need for precise predictions. This process involves engaging diverse perspectives within the organization to build a cohesive view of potential scenarios.

Our Scenario Planning Sprint offers a streamlined yet comprehensive solution, including two online surveys and a one-day workshop. This approach ensures that teams can develop actionable insights and align their strategic planning within weeks, rather than months.
